Ghost Hunting: Half.com, Oregon

Half.com was once called Halfway, but the Half.com marketing team convinced them to change their name as one of those weird New Economy publicity stunts. I think the only reference we saw to the new name was the sign leading into town. All of the businesses were still labelled as "Halfway."

The Pine Valley Museum's a charming place, full of artifacts from the mining days. Most notably, Eric and Victoria found a book of the region's death records; one minister was said to have "died at his post." The minister's wife went ten years later, her epitaph being "did what she could." Another left the memorable words, "Life is good, if you don't weaken."

A historical curiosity of a more recent vintage.

A wagon outside the museum.

The Halfway jail. We're not sure if this is its original site or if it was relocated, but we were assured that this was the original wood. This thing's built of 2x4's laid on top of each other. It's as solid a thing as you can make of wood.

The bunk in the jail. Our museum host, Tom, told us about how once, when he was a kid, an incarcerated drunk screamed at him through the jail window, scaring him silly.

Tom didn't know why this was in the jail. Hmm--terrible medical experiments, maybe?

The Halfway schoolhouse.

Enough fooling around. We said goodbye to Tom and headed up into Cornucopia for our date with the mountains.
